The white elm is a large tree that used to be the dominant urban tree – planted in near monoculture in the streets of Ontario cities.
As you saw in our conversation with Mr. Martin Neumann, Dutch Elm Disease, a disease caused by a fungus and spread by a beetle which killed 3/4 of the elm trees of North America between 1928 and 1989. It spread rapidly along monocultured urban areas. In the video below, Martin talks about what we might have learned from the spread of Dutch Elm Disease that may have helped us in our current management struggle with the Emerald Ash Borer (around 8 min).

There is still a large elm tree on campus near the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario - where you can see the characteristic umbrella shape of a mature tree.
